National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

Contributed by: Crestwood’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Team

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, also known as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) Mental Health Month. The purpose of the month is to increase awareness of the unique challenges faced by minorities in accessing mental health care and to promote resources and support for those who may be struggling. The month also aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues and encourage individuals to seek help when needed.

There are several ways to observe National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month:

  • You can educate yourself on the unique challenges faced by minorities regarding mental health.
  • You can spread awareness by sharing information and resources on social media or hosting events that promote mental health awareness.
  • You can support organizations that promote mental health care for minority communities by donating or volunteering.
  • Prioritize your own mental health by seeking professional help if needed and encouraging others to do the same.

International Self-Care Day

International Self-Care Day is July 24! Do you have regular rhythms of self-care? Below are some ideas that combine mind, body, and spirit self-care – see how they overlap and intertwine.

  • Write in a prayer or gratitude journal.
  • Look up a new recipe and prepare yourself a healthy meal.
  • Call or visit a friend you haven’t seen lately and spend time catching up.
  • Prepare yourself a cup of coffee or tea and sip it slowly and intentionally.
  • Practice a few gentle stretches when you first wake up and before going to bed.
  • Laugh out loud with a friend or family member.
  • Spend time with your pets and soak in their unconditional love.
  • Visit a park and read a book in the shade of the trees.
  • Take a prayer or gratitude walk, calling to mind the things you are thankful for.
  • Stay hydrated – try some fruit-infused water for a refreshing summer beverage.
  • Light a fragrant candle or use an essential oils diffuser to enjoy calming scents like lavender and eucalyptus.
  • Start a jar of positive affirmations, scriptures, or quotes that encourage your heart.

What are some other ways you can care for yourself – mind, body, and spirit – so that you can thrive?

Mindfulness Meditation: Stargazing

When was the last time you stepped outside and looked up at the night sky? Did you spot a constellation? Was the moon a sliver of light beaming through the tree branches? Did you see a shooting star? Were you in awe of the vastness of the universe, thinking about how small our planet earth is within the star-sprinkled Milky Way galaxy?

There is something humbling and wondrous about stargazing. It ignites in us a sense of awe and splendor. Not only does it help put things in perspective, but it also has physical health benefits, like lowering our cortisol levels and reducing blood pressure. It also increases mindfulness, creativity, and feelings of connection.

This summer, why not try stargazing to spark your imagination, reduce your stress, and help you focus on what matters most.
