November is National Gratitude Month! What better time to reflect on life’s blessings, big and small. Gratitude is a posture of thankfulness. It is intentional. Gratitude seeks out the small things – a warm cup of coffee or tea; a walk along a tree-lined street; a glowing autumn sunset. It also recognizes the important things – time spent with family and friends; a meaningful role; nurturing our spirituality. A grateful heart is one that notices the little blessings throughout the day and takes inventory.
Whether we have a gratitude list or say grace before a meal, we can all be intentional about giving thanks. How will you usher in this Thanksgiving season with a grateful heart?

Family is foundational to Crestwood! Our incredible employees, the people we serve and their family members, and our local communities – we all make up the Crestwood family! Spread out across the state, we have a far-reaching impact that is rooted in our mission and vision for recovery. We have different responsibilities and unique strengths that combined contribute to the well-being of our family as a whole. We all play essential roles in bringing the hope of recovery to our programs. As a family, we are here to support one another. How can you encourage a member of our Crestwood family today?

November 13 is World Kindness Day! Kindness springs forth from a gentle, compassionate heart. Acts of kindness don’t need to be expensive or extravagant. If we see a need we can help meet, we can make a difference by stepping up.
Kindness is patience. It is a willingness to listen; to be present and just sit with someone who is having a hard time. Kindness is making a meal for someone who is ill or grieving. It’s calling a grandparent to say you’re thinking of them. Kindness is offering to watch a friend’s children so they can have a date night with their spouse. It’s buying a coffee for the person behind you in the drive thru. It’s bringing in chocolates for your coworkers. It’s helping an elderly neighbor by mowing their lawn. There are so many different ways to show that we see others and that we care.
At Crestwood, we are a family of compassionate individuals that truly show kindness every day, both to our coworkers and to the people we serve. In our jobs, in our families, in our communities, in our world – how can we show even more kindness?

In this season of giving thanks, why not take the opportunity to reach out to someone who has positively impacted your life with a heartfelt letter of gratitude? Set aside at least 15 minutes to compose your letter. It should be thoughtful and detailed and at least 250 words (typed or handwritten). Try to express specific ways in which this family member, friend, mentor or other important person has made a difference in your life. If you decide to, you can send or hand-deliver the letter. Just think how much it will brighten someone’s day!
Did you know that writing letters of gratitude has positive health benefits for you too?
In his book, Gratitude Works, Robert Emmons, Ph.D., highlights a study where undergraduate students wrote one gratitude letter every two weeks, for the course of eight weeks. According to surveys that evaluated their mood, life satisfaction, and feelings of gratitude and happiness, the results showed increased levels of happiness and wellbeing after each letter was written (even if they didn’t send the letter). Furthermore, another study examined the effects of writing gratitude letters on levels of depression and physical symptoms (like aches and pains). It showed improvements in physical health, including fewer depressive symptoms.
If you’re feeling up to a challenge, try writing three gratitude letters during National Gratitude Month this November. And see how it benefits your well-being too!
